„Man labai įdomiai susidėliojo tie laipteliai.

„Supratau, kiek daug nematomo darbo tenka tokio didelio festivalio vadovui.

Renginys nemokamas. Daugiau informacijos – čia.

Anelija Slabenko, Coordinator of the Organisational Affairs at VU SR and Head of “AD ASTRA”, shares what to expect from this year’s festival.

University is more than lectures and classrooms

In Latin, “ad astra” means “to the stars”. The name of the festival also reflects its main idea – to bring the VU community together in one place, help its new members discover the opportunities available at the University and encourage them to take their first steps into student life.

As is tradition, the festival day will begin with a lecture by VU Rector Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas. Anelija recalls that this was one of the most memorable activities at the first “AD ASTRA” festival she attended.

“It is a unique opportunity to hear about Vilnius University and its history directly from the Rector and to better understand the university you have joined. When I was a first-year student, I came to ‘AD ASTRA’ and attended the Rector’s lecture. It was really interesting to learn things I had never even thought about before,” she recalls.

Throughout the day, there will also be discussions on topics relevant to students, where festival participants will not only be able to listen to guests, but also ask questions and join the conversation themselves.

Another important part of the festival is the contacts fair. Organisations, clubs, initiatives and projects active at the University will present their activities across the courtyards of the VU Central Campus. Visitors will be able to meet their representatives, try out different activities and discover an area of student life that suits them.

“The contacts fair is a great opportunity to see just how many possibilities our University has to offer. You can do much more here than just study – you can take part in sports and arts, or join various programmes, clubs and initiatives. Some activities will be available to try out right away, so you can see whether they are right for you,” says A. Slabenko.

The VU Culture Centre and Health and Sport Centre will also take part in the fair. According to Anelija, visitors may leave not only with new contacts and ideas, but also with quite an impressive collection of stickers.

Getting to know your faculty through play

This year, an activity featuring faculty heads and representatives, which attracted a great deal of interest last year, will return to the festival. This time, however, it will have a refreshed format.

“Last year’s experience showed us that students are interested in hearing unique stories and experiences specifically from their own faculty. The activity with deans and faculty representatives was a real success, so we thought: if it worked last year, this year we’ll tweak the format a little and make it even better,” says the Head of the festival.

Anelija also reveals that festival visitors can expect a surprise during the daytime programme, although its details are being kept under wraps for now. Clues can already be found on VU SA’s social media, while the full answer will be revealed during the festival.

Those wishing to capture memories from the day will be able to visit the traditional “AD ASTRA” photo booth. The festival will conclude with an evening concert in the VU Grand Courtyard – the performers and full concert programme will be announced soon.

“When organising the festival, we wanted to come up with something different – not simply put on a concert with performers, but really engage the audience. I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone at ‘AD ASTRA’ so you can discover for yourselves what we have prepared,” invites A. Slabenko.

From festival participant to festival head

Anelija’s own “AD ASTRA” story also began among the festival crowd. In her first year of studies, she attended the festival as a first-year student; in her second year, she joined as a volunteer; and this year, she became the Head of the entire festival.

“It’s interesting how these steps fell into place for me. In my first year, I attended as a first-year student and already thought that it would be nice to get involved somehow. In my second year, I became a volunteer – I really enjoyed seeing what happens behind the scenes, the events themselves and the whole organisational process. And this year, I became the Head of the festival,” she recalls.

While visitors see the concert, discussions and activities, behind them lie countless hours of planning, conversations and coordination. This has become one of Anelija’s most important lessons while organising this year’s event.

“I realised just how much unseen work goes into leading a festival of this size. You think you’ve already thought of everything, but then one morning you wake up and remember: I still haven’t messaged that person, I still need to coordinate this, otherwise something won’t happen. I’ve learned to approach everything thoughtfully, while also not being afraid to make mistakes and experiment, because otherwise there can be no growth,” says Anelija.

According to her, the festival can only grow when its organisers do not limit themselves to the formats used in previous years, but instead look for new ideas and ways to surprise the community. However, the most important part of “AD ASTRA” remains its people and the opportunity to experience what it means to be part of the VU community.

Although the festival is particularly relevant to first-year students, Anelija also encourages students in later years to return. It is impossible to discover everything happening at the University in just one year, so the contacts fair and other activities offer new opportunities to meet people and discover possibilities that may have previously gone unnoticed.

“Come and make new friends – when you have friends by your side, joining an initiative together feels much easier. This event brings together a community that encourages you to grow, and that is why the festival itself continues to grow as well,” she adds.

The VU SA integration festival “AD ASTRA” will take place on 4 September from 1 p.m. in the VU Grand Courtyard. The event is free of charge. Moving into a dormitory can raise more questions than answers: can I live with a friend, what will I find in my room, do I need to bring a fridge, and what should I do if I do not get along with my roommate?

Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine student Roberta Kirkliauskaitė and Artūras Šaltis, administrator of the five-storey dormitory complex, discussed life in Vilnius University dormitories on the START FM radio show Tiesiogiai iš VU SA. They shared the most important information about the allocation of dormitory places, moving in, everyday life, and why a dormitory can become much more than simply a place to sleep.

How are dormitory places allocated?

Vilnius University dormitories are divided into several dormitory campuses. Students may be accommodated in Saulėtekis, Didlaukis, M. K. Čiurlionio Street, or other dormitories, depending on their faculty and the number of available places at each location. If there are not enough places in one dormitory campus for all students from a particular faculty, some may be accommodated elsewhere.

According to A. Šaltis, it is important to understand that when submitting an application, a student is applying for a place in a dormitory, not for a specific room or floor. Submitting an application earlier also does not automatically mean that a student will receive a better room.

“You have to understand that you are being allocated a place, not a specific room. It is not the case that whoever applies first gets something first or gets something better. Our commitment is to provide you with a place,” the administrator explains.

This year, around 1,100 applications for dormitory accommodation were received. According to A. Šaltis, places were provided to almost all students who completed their applications correctly and complied with the dormitory’s internal rules and financial obligations.

One of the most common problems is an incomplete application. A student may have started filling in the application but failed to provide all the necessary information or confirm their choice. In such cases, the administration cannot know whether the student still needs accommodation. It is therefore important not only to submit the application, but also to regularly check your email and complete the steps indicated in the messages you receive.

Dormitories are not only for first-year students

Although priority is given to first-year students, students in later years can also apply for accommodation. First-year students are prioritised because many of them are moving to an unfamiliar city for the first time, do not yet have a social circle there, and are only beginning to integrate into the University community.

When places become available, students in later years can also move into dormitories. They can register on the electronic waiting list and may receive accommodation even after the academic year has already begun.

That is exactly what happened to R. Kirkliauskaitė. Before moving into a dormitory, she lived in a rented flat, but rising rent and heating costs encouraged her to look for a more affordable option.

“Everyone who had lived in a dormitory kept saying that you are not really a student if you have never lived in one. So I thought maybe I should give it a try too,” she recalls.

The student applied for accommodation in the M. K. Čiurlionio Street dormitory. She had to wait several months for a place to become available, but eventually received an offer and moved in.

“If you are going through a more difficult period, your rent increases, or your financial situation changes, students in later years really should not be afraid of moving into a dormitory. It is not as scary as people sometimes make it sound. There are lots of people around, a shared kitchen, a roommate. If you get along well, you do not feel lonely,” says R. Kirkliauskaitė.

Can I live with a friend?

One of the most common questions future residents ask is whether they can choose their roommate in advance. For example, if two friends submit applications at the same time, but one receives a place in Saulėtekis and the other in Didlaukis, can they still arrange to live together?

During the busiest period of first-year student accommodation, it is usually not possible to take individual preferences into account. The administration has to accommodate more than a thousand students within a short period of time, so rooms are allocated according to the general procedure and the places available at that time.

However, this does not mean that living with a friend will never be possible. Once the main moving-in period is over, residents can contact the administrator, register on the electronic waiting list, swap places, or wait until a place becomes available in the room they would like to move into.

R. Kirkliauskaitė herself took advantage of this opportunity. At the time, she lived in the M. K. Čiurlionio Street dormitory, while her friend lived in the dormitory campus commonly known as “Kamčiatka”.

“Her roommate moved out, leaving one free place in a double room. I went to the administrator and asked whether we could arrange for me to move in, and it worked out. You just need to wait a little until the first-year move-in period settles down and agree with the other person on who would like to move where,” the student explains.

Can I choose between a double and a triple room?

First-year students generally cannot choose a specific room, room type, or floor. Dormitories have different layouts, including double and triple rooms, while the M. K. Čiurlionio Street dormitories also have small single rooms.

However, a single room does not necessarily mean having a space comparable to a private flat. These rooms are very small, while the number of double and triple rooms depends on the layout of each building.

According to A. Šaltis, the University currently does not have the capacity to provide a private room to everyone who would like one. Dormitory accommodation should primarily be understood as an affordable way to help students settle into the city and integrate into the University community.

The situation may change over time. As some students move out, others change rooms, or places become available, residents can discuss changes to their living arrangements with the administration. At the beginning of September, however, the main priority is to accommodate all students who have been allocated a place.

What if I do not get along with my roommate?

Sharing a room with another person can be both a fun experience and a challenge. The routines and rules you are used to at home may be completely different from your roommate’s habits. One person may want to go to sleep early, while the other studies at night; one may value perfect order, while the other does not mind a growing pile of clothes on the chair.

According to the interviewees, dormitory life teaches students how to share a space in everyday life – how to communicate, negotiate, and compromise. If disagreements arise, the first step should be to calmly discuss each person’s expectations and agree on cleaning, guests, quiet hours, shared belongings, and expenses.

If the situation cannot be resolved between roommates, students can contact the dormitory administrator and discuss the possibility of changing rooms. A free place may not be available immediately, but students move in and out of dormitories throughout the year, so a solution can often be found later.

What happens on move-in day?

After receiving notification that they have been allocated a place, students must arrive at the dormitory at the specified time. During move-in, the necessary documents are signed, the main rules are explained, and students receive the keys to their room.

From the moment they receive their keys, students can start living in the room, organising their space, or bringing in their belongings. There is no need to do everything on the same day: you can collect your keys, see the room, measure the available space, and return with the things you need later.

Rooms usually come with a bed and mattress, wardrobe, desk, and chair.

Bed linen, pillows, duvets, and other personal belongings are not provided, so students need to bring their own. Electrical appliances are allowed, but it is important to consider the capacity of the electrical system. Using several high-powered appliances at the same time, such as multiple heaters, can trip the circuit breakers. Additional heaters are also not intended to turn a dormitory room into summer in the middle of winter.

What do you actually need for your first night?

R. Kirkliauskaitė advises students not to bring everything they own when moving in for the first time. Dormitory space is limited and has to be shared with another person, so it is better to start with the essentials.

For the first night, the most important things to have are:

a pillow, duvet, and bed linen;

a towel;

toiletries;

slippers for the shared shower;

a few changes of clothes;

chargers and other essential personal belongings.

“People definitely bring too much stuff. A dormitory room is not that big, so maybe you do not need to bring your entire wardrobe straight away. You can start with autumn clothes and swap them for winter clothes later,” the student advises.

To make the room feel more comfortable, a small desk lamp, a few posters, photographs, or other easily removable decorations can help. However, before drilling into walls, putting up wallpaper, or making more substantial changes, students should consult the administrator.

Fridge and kettle? Talk to your roommate first

It is better not to buy a fridge, kettle, or other shared appliances before meeting your roommate. Otherwise, both of you might arrive with a fridge, only to discover that there is not enough space in the room for two.

“I have seen people having to negotiate over whose fridge they are going to use, who will sell theirs or return it. It is much easier to meet your roommate first and then buy whatever you are missing together,” says R. Kirkliauskaitė.

If you buy something together, it is worth agreeing in advance on who will keep it once you stop living together. One resident might keep the appliance and reimburse the other for their share. Small agreements like these can help prevent conflicts later.

There are no shared refrigerators for entire floors – students keep their food in refrigerators in their rooms. Sometimes food is left in shared kitchens for others to take. In such cases, there will usually be a note letting people know they are welcome to help themselves.

Mould, a broken handle, or a draughty window – who should you tell?

There are all kinds of stories about dormitories – from cockroaches to rooms that are supposedly never maintained. According to R. Kirkliauskaitė, problems can occur, but the most important thing is not to ignore them or wait until they get worse.

“Once we found black mould underneath the wallpaper. We informed the administrator and were moved to another room. These kinds of issues are dealt with – you just need to pay attention to your surroundings and report problems when you notice them,” she says.

If a window is draughty, a door handle falls off, or you notice another problem in the room, you should first contact the administration rather than simply complaining to friends or posting in the dormitory Facebook group.

“If something is wrong, you write to the administrator and they try to fix it. If there is a problem with the window or a draught coming in somewhere, you need to report it rather than just put up with it,” the student emphasises.

At the same time, residents are responsible for keeping their own rooms clean and in good condition. The administration cannot completely renovate every room within the few days between previous residents moving out and new students moving in. The condition in which current residents leave their room therefore directly affects the students who come after them.

Can I renovate or decorate my room?

The possibility of changing the appearance of a room depends on the particular dormitory and the condition of the room. In older rooms, students may be allowed to repaint walls, put up wallpaper, or make other minor improvements after consulting the administration.

In newly renovated rooms, however, residents may be asked not to drill into walls or damage newly installed furniture. A. Šaltis recalled one case in which residents left sixteen holes in the wall of a room that had been renovated only a few months earlier. Changes like these can quickly damage a newly refurbished space, so any planned work should first be discussed with the administration.

R. Kirkliauskaitė said she had helped friends renovate their dormitory room and even lay laminate flooring. When doing renovation work, however, residents should remember quiet hours and avoid noisy work late in the evening.

“A dormitory can be a creative space where you make the environment your own – you can put up posters or choose the colours you like. I have even seen a room where each half had different wallpaper because the roommates wanted different things,” the student says.

Students definitely cook more than just pasta in shared kitchens

Dormitories have shared kitchens where students can prepare their meals. Some have gas cookers and ovens, so if you have never used one before, you may need to learn how to light and operate it safely.

Students usually need to have their own pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery. Used dishes should be washed immediately and kept in your room rather than left in the shared kitchen.

“People definitely cook. Sometimes they even make too much food, go from room to room, and offer it to others so it does not go to waste,” says R. Kirkliauskaitė.

The most important thing is to wipe down surfaces after cooking, avoid leaving burnt food behind, and not clutter the kitchen with personal belongings. Personal rubbish should be taken to the outdoor bins rather than placed in the small bin in the shared kitchen.

According to A. Šaltis, cleanliness in shared spaces largely depends on residents’ own habits. Cleaners are responsible for maintaining common areas, but not for dealing with every student’s personal rubbish bags or dirty pots.

How do you do laundry in a dormitory?

There is no need to take your clothes home every weekend – paid laundry facilities are available in the dormitory campuses. At the time the radio show was recorded, one wash cost around €3 and drying cost around €2.

In some laundry rooms, services can be paid for through a mobile app. The app allows students to see which washing machines are occupied and how much time remains until a cycle is finished. Money can be added using online banking, so there is no need to collect coins for the washing machine.

Still, it is worth setting aside enough time for laundry. Evenings and weekends tend to be busier, so it is useful to check the app first to see whether any machines are available. Residents of some dormitories have to walk to another building to use the laundry facilities, meaning that carrying a full bag of clothes through the winter can become a student experience in itself.

Is it worth bringing a car to the dormitory?

There are parking spaces near the dormitories, but their number is limited. Before bringing a car, it is worth considering whether you will actually use it in Vilnius.

“If you are not going to use your car in the city and it will just sit there so you can drive home once a month, think about whether you really need it. With a Lithuanian Student Identity Card, you can use public transport at a discounted rate,” R. Kirkliauskaitė reminds students.

A car that remains unused for months takes up a parking space that may be needed by someone who drives to lectures, work, or an internship every day. The interviewees recommend spending the first month observing how often you would actually use a car and only then deciding whether it is worth keeping one near the dormitory.

It is also important to park properly – do not take up two spaces or block other vehicles. Dormitory rules apply not only inside rooms and corridors, but also in the surrounding premises.

Many dormitories also have bicycle racks or storage areas. A bicycle can be a convenient way to travel to your faculty, but unused bicycles should not be left in storage for years either.

Join your dormitory community group

Dormitory residents have separate social media groups where they share relevant information, report problems or lost-and-found items, look for roommates, give away things they no longer need, and sometimes invite others to take leftover food.

R. Kirkliauskaitė recommends joining your dormitory group as soon as you move in. It can help you learn about changes more quickly, find help, or simply see what is happening among your neighbours. However, serious faults or dangerous situations should always be reported directly to the administration – a post in a social media group does not replace an official report.

Can I live in the dormitory during the summer?

Students can also live in dormitories during the summer. The accommodation agreement generally remains valid for the period specified in it, and students who want to keep their place for another period need to renew it on time.

The dormitory fee remains fixed regardless of whether a student stays in Vilnius during the summer, goes abroad, returns to their family home, or goes on holiday. This helps balance the building’s maintenance and heating costs across different seasons.

If, after a few months, a student realises that dormitory life is not for them, the agreement can be terminated. Although the agreement may specify a notice period, the administration assesses individual situations flexibly. Once the student returns their keys, the fee is calculated according to the number of days they actually lived in the dormitory.

“No one is going to force you to stay. We agree on when the student will return the keys, and if they move out in the middle of the month, we charge them only for the number of days they actually lived there,” explains A. Šaltis.

The same principle applies when moving in after the beginning of a month – students do not have to pay for the period before they actually moved into the room.

A dormitory is not just a place to sleep – it is a place to live

Before moving in, students often focus on the condition of the room, the showers, or whether they need a fridge. Over time, however, the people around them often become the most important part of dormitory life.

Your coursemates, students from later years, tutors, and people from other faculties or countries may all live nearby. The kitchen, corridor, or your room can become a place for shared dinners, conversations, studying, and spontaneous get-togethers.

According to R. Kirkliauskaitė, moving from a rented flat into a dormitory helped reduce feelings of loneliness and homesickness.

“A dormitory should not just be a place where you sleep – it should be a place where you live. It is a very social space that can become a meeting place. Your coursemates and maybe even your tutors live here, so you are never really alone in a dormitory – there will always be someone you can talk to,” says the student.

More information about Vilnius University dormitories, applications, allocation of places, accommodation agreements, and prices is available on the VU accommodation website.

Pavyzdžiui, jeigu du (-vi) draugai (-ės) pateikė prašymus kartu, tačiau vienas (-a) gavo vietą Saulėtekyje, o kitas (-a) – Didlaukyje, ar jie (-os) vis tiek galėtų apsigyventi viename kambaryje?

A. Šalčio teigimu, Universitetas kol kas neturi galimybių kiekvienam (-ai) norinčiam (-ai) suteikti atskiro kambario.

Tačiau rugsėjo pradžioje svarbiausia pirmiausia apgyvendinti visus (-as) vietas gavusius (-as) studentus (-es).

Vienas (-a) nori miegoti anksčiau, kitas (-a) mokosi naktimis, vienam (-ai) svarbi ideali tvarka, kitam (-ai) ant kėdės auganti drabužių krūva netrukdo.

Be to, papildomi šildytuvai nėra skirti kambaryje kurti vasarišką temperatūrą vidury žiemos.

Ko iš tiesų reikia pirmąją naktį?

R. Kirkliauskaitė pataria per pirmą įsikraustymą nebandyti atsivežti visų namuose turimų daiktų. Bendrabučio erdvė yra ribota, ja dar reikia dalytis su kitu žmogumi, todėl pirmiausia verta apsistoti ties tuo, ko tikrai prireiks.

Pirmajai nakčiai svarbiausia turėti:

pagalvę, antklodę ir patalynę;

rankšluostį;

higienos priemones;

šlepetes bendram dušui;

kelis drabužių komplektus;

Vienas (-a) gyventojas (-a) gali jį pasilikti ir grąžinti kitam (-ai) jo sumokėtą dalį. Tokie, iš pirmo žvilgsnio maži, susitarimai vėliau padeda išvengti konfliktų.

Bendrų šaldytuvų visam aukštui nėra – savo maistą studentai (-ės) laiko kambariuose esančiuose šaldytuvuose. Bendrose virtuvėse kartais paliekamas maistas, kuriuo gyventojai (-os) nori pasidalyti.

Pasak A. Šalčio, bendrose erdvėse palaikoma tvarka priklauso nuo pačių gyventojų įpročių. Valytojai (-os) yra atsakingi (-os) už bendrųjų erdvių priežiūrą, tačiau ne už kiekvieno (-s) studento (-ės) asmeninių šiukšlių maišus ar paliktus nešvarius puodus.

Kaip bendrabutyje skalbiami drabužiai?

Drabužių vežti namo kiekvieną savaitgalį nereikia – bendrabučių miesteliuose veikia mokamos skalbyklos. Laidos įrašymo metu vienas skalbimas kainavo apie 3 eurus, o džiovinimas – apie 2 eurus.

Kai kuriose skalbyklose už paslaugas galima atsiskaityti mobiliąja programėle. Joje galima matyti, kurios skalbyklės užimtos, kiek laiko liko iki ciklo pabaigos, o pinigus galima įnešti naudojantis elektronine bankininkyste, taigi monetų skalbyklei kaupti nereikia.

Vis dėlto skalbimui verta skirti pakankamai laiko.

It also marks the beginning of student life – something that can be difficult to picture clearly before September. How will you get to know your coursemates? What awaits beyond lectures? What traditions, activities, and opportunities will become part of your everyday life?

For many first-year students, Freshers’ Camp is where they begin finding answers to these questions even before their studies officially start. VU Kaunas Faculty student Arijus Blockis, VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics student Ūla Marija Čepaitytė, VU Business School student Karina Burakaitė, and VU Life Sciences Centre student Kipras Kliučinskas share their experiences.

Student Life Is More Than Lectures

Before arriving at university, student life can often feel like a big unknown. VU Life Sciences Centre student Kipras Kliučinskas says he was worried that once his studies began, most of his time would be consumed by academics.

“I imagined student life as being more isolated than it actually is. I was really afraid that I would simply get buried in my studies and that there wouldn’t be many other opportunities,” he recalls.

Freshers’ Camp became one of the first opportunities to see that university life extends far beyond the study programme itself. Here, first-year students get to know student organisations, initiatives, faculty traditions, and other activities they can later become involved in.

“I didn’t realise just how many opportunities a single organisation could open up or how many different paths it could show you,” K. Kliučinskas says about discovering VU SR.

VU Kaunas Faculty student Arijus Blockis arrived at the camp with similar expectations. Having taken a gap year before starting university, he hoped that this new environment would help him meet more people with similar interests.

“Since I started university after taking a gap year, one of my worries was that it might be a little more difficult to connect with my coursemates. I was also unsure whether going to the camp was even worth it – I was so hesitant that I only registered an hour before registration closed. But I’m glad I did, because I really did manage to connect with my coursemates,” says A. Blockis.

Things You Won’t Find in a Study Programme Description

Although information about study programmes, courses, or organisations operating at the University can be found online, students agree that hearing about them at the camp is a completely different experience.

For Arijus, the camp helped him gain a clearer understanding of what to expect from his studies.

“I found out more specifically what subjects I would be studying, what tools we would be using, and what topics we would cover,” he recalls.

For VU Business School student Karina Burakaitė, conversations with mentors were particularly useful, helping her better understand not only lectures but also assessments and the everyday rhythm of university studies.

“At school, you always hear that exams at university are extremely important and that if you fail one, all sorts of things will happen. The mentors helped us understand more deeply how university life actually works and realise that it isn’t as scary as it might initially seem,” she says.

For VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics student Ūla Marija Čepaitytė, one of these moments was discovering exchange opportunities and student initiatives. Instead of simply reading about them, she heard directly from students who had already experienced them.

“A girl from my faculty who had been on Erasmus told us about it. She showed us her photos and shared her experience. You can read about initiatives too, but when people come and show you what they do in person and share their experiences, you see it completely differently,” says Ū. Čepaitytė.

Seeing Familiar Faces in September

One of the most common concerns before starting university is the fear of entering an environment where everyone else seems to already have their own group of friends. VU Business School student Karina imagined student life in much the same way before attending the camp.

“I thought there would be lots of people who already knew each other, that there would be established groups, and that it would be really difficult to fit in once September came. But when I arrived, I realised that everyone was nervous, nobody knew anyone, and everyone was looking for their people,” she recalls.

Karina also came to the camp with another goal – to meet her future dorm roommates. The plan worked out even better than expected: today, she calls the girls she met at the camp her best friends.

VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics student Ūla also remembers wondering whether she should go to the camp at all. Icebreakers and an unfamiliar environment seemed uncomfortable at first, but that feeling quickly changed once she arrived.

“I thought it would be really difficult to make friends at university. But everyone was very open to meeting new people and talked to each other a lot. Even though we were all very different – studying different things and coming from different cities – it still felt like we got along really well,” she says.

Experiencing Faculty Traditions Before September

At Freshers’ Camp, first-year students not only hear about their future student life – they become part of it themselves. For VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics student Ūla, one such experience was discovering faculty traditions, including faculty dances, MIDI, and “Roko opera”.

“I really liked how everyone encouraged you to join in and take part in everything. When they told us there would be preparations for the September 1st procession, I was really looking forward to it. When the day came, it was so much fun to contribute, make posters together, and come up with chants,” she recalls.

For VU Life Sciences Centre student Kipras, the camp also helped him understand that life at the faculty does not end at the classroom door.

“I realised that the activities at my faculty are very broad and don’t end with lectures or laboratory work. They extend into research and other academic activities as well. The faculty can be a place where you choose for yourself which path you want to take,” he says.

For VU Business School student Karina, camp activities related to her field of study provided further reassurance that she had chosen the right programme.

“There were many tasks related to the field we had chosen – business and finance. They helped me realise that I really had enrolled in the programme I wanted and that I genuinely enjoy doing this,” she says.

Starting University Already Knowing You Belong

There is still some time between Freshers’ Camp and the first lecture, but by then the University no longer feels completely unfamiliar. There are familiar faces, traditions you already know, activities you want to try, and people you know you can turn to if you need help.

“I felt much more confident on September 1st because I could already see familiar people and didn’t feel alone. The camp helped me realise that I really had enrolled where I wanted to be. It was a kind of reassurance that everything was okay and that I was in the right place,” says Karina.

VU Kaunas Faculty student Arijus would recommend Freshers’ Camp to future first-year students not only because of the new friendships or the fun experience.

“You’ll learn a lot of useful information that will genuinely help you while studying at Vilnius University,” he says.

VU Life Sciences Centre student Kipras sums up the Freshers’ Camp experience simply:

“You should start your student years on a high note, and this is one of the best ways to do it.”

Information about every VU SR faculty freshers' camp, including dates and ticket information, can be found on the VU SR Freshmen Camps webpage.

During the sessions, teams from 12 VU SR units identified the most pressing issues students face, formulated their annual goals, and developed action plans to achieve them.

The division planning sessions are part of VU SR's annual strategic planning process. Over the course of three days, the teams analysed the situation of students within their divisions, identified the key issue they aim to address in the coming year, and defined specific objectives, actions, and impact indicators that will help measure the changes achieved.

"During the planning sessions, it is important not only to formulate an ambitious goal but also to ensure that it is based on a real student issue and that the planned actions can lead to measurable change. The teams thoroughly analysed the situation, engaged in discussions, and sought solutions that they will be able to implement over the coming year," says Gabrielė Šlepetytė, VU SA Planning Process Coordinator.

Annual goals set by VU SR units

The VU SA Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics and VU SA Šiauliai Academy teams will develop their annual goals and action plans at a later stage.

Moderators support the teams throughout the process

Throughout the planning process, the division teams were supported by moderators, who facilitated discussions and helped the teams move systematically from identifying a problem to developing a concrete action plan. Before the planning sessions, division presidents outlined their expectations for moderators, and based on these needs, VU SA Planning Process Coordinator Gabrielė Šlepetytė matched moderators with the divisions.

"When assigning moderators, it is important to consider not only their own preferences but also the specific needs of each team, their previous experience, and the nature of the issue the division plans to address. Our goal is to create pairings that encourage open discussion, help teams identify the core of the problem, and enable them to complete the planning process with a realistic and well-defined action plan," says G. Šlepetytė.

According to her, the moderator's role is not to make decisions on behalf of the team, but rather to help the team find the most suitable direction on its own.

"Moderators ask questions, help teams identify gaps in their plans, and encourage them to reach a shared understanding of the desired outcome. However, the final goal and responsibility for achieving it always remain with the division itself. That is why it is essential that every team member understands the change they are working towards and how they will contribute to it," the Planning Process Coordinator explains.

The goals and implementation plans prepared during the planning sessions will now be submitted to the VU SA Parliament for approval. Once approved, they will serve as the foundation for each division's activities over the coming year. Throughout the year, the teams will monitor their progress, evaluate the outcomes of the actions they implement, and work to ensure that the ideas developed during the planning process result in meaningful improvements for Vilnius University students.

Where can I find my timetable? How do I choose my elective courses? What will the lecturers be like? And perhaps the most important question of all – will I find my people here?

For many first-year students, these questions are answered with the help of mentors. They welcome future students at the train station, encourage them to join activities during the freshers' camp, and, once the academic year begins, help them navigate university systems and answer any questions that arise.

On START FM, Vilnius University Faculty of Philology student Sibilė Pečiulytė, Faculty of Philosophy student Danielius Cibulskas, and Faculty of History student Gabija Milašauskytė shared how their mentors helped them and why that support mattered at the beginning of their studies. Not long ago, they themselves attended freshers' camps without knowing what to expect. This year, they will be returning as mentors.

The First Meeting Begins at the Train Station

A freshers' camp usually starts long before students arrive at the campsite – it begins at the train station. This is where future students meet, for the first time, the people with whom they will soon share lecture halls and student life. Approaching complete strangers can feel intimidating, which is why mentors play such an important role: they are often the first to say hello and invite newcomers to join the conversation.

Sibilė recalls that the mentors' warmth made her feel welcome from the very beginning.

"Even while we were waiting for the train, the mentors were incredibly friendly. They greeted us straight away and invited us into their circle. I was never left standing alone – someone would always come over, help me, or simply start a conversation," she says.

At first, Gabija kept to herself at the station. Groups of students had already started talking while she stood nearby wondering what to do. Eventually, she decided to step out of her comfort zone and introduced herself to two other future students.

"I'm really glad I did because one of them has become one of my closest friends. I think the camp helped us build that connection, and we've stayed close ever since," says Gabija.

Danielius joined the camp with almost no expectations after a former classmate encouraged him to go. Once he arrived at the station, however, he realised he would have to meet new people. Although starting conversations with strangers did not come naturally to him, he decided to introduce himself to another first-year student.

"That conversation turned into a really wonderful friendship. Today we're very close friends," he says.

Every Mentor Is There to Help

Although mentors are assigned to specific study programmes, those boundaries quickly disappear during the camp. Sibilė studies English and Spanish, yet she also formed a close connection with the mentor of the Scandinavian Studies programme.

"All the mentors looked after all the first-year students. If you wanted to, you could approach a mentor from a completely different programme. There was never any division between us," she recalls.

Before attending the camp, Sibilė imagined that a mentor would be something like a university mum or dad – someone who would show her around and explain how everything worked. In reality, the relationship became much closer than she had expected.

"My mentor became a friend. Whenever we met in the faculty courtyard, they would always say hello and ask how I was doing. And that wasn't just during the first few weeks – it continued even six months after my studies had begun," she says.

Before the camp, Gabija had no clear idea of what a mentor's role should be. For her, her mentor became someone she could always turn to with questions, knowing she would receive an answer.

"We had informal conversations and reflection sessions. Our mentor shared advice, told us about the lecturers, and helped us feel more confident about starting university. She was there not only during the camp but also after classes began, whenever questions or challenges came up," says Gabija.

"How Are You Feeling? What's Going Well, and What's Not?"

At first, Danielius was somewhat sceptical about the idea of mentors. In secondary school he had encountered similar roles, but they often felt more symbolic than practical. That is why the care shown by the Faculty of Philosophy mentor came as such a surprise.

"Our mentor genuinely cared about us. Every day, whenever she saw our group in the courtyard, she would come over and ask, 'How are you feeling? What's going well? What's not?' I wasn't used to someone showing that level of care," Danielius recalls.

Rather than waiting for first-year students to ask for help, the mentor took the initiative herself. She cared not only about their studies but also about how they were adjusting to their new environment.

"She became an important person in my transition to university life. She cared about both our well-being and our academic experience – how things were going and whether we were facing any difficulties. She exceeded all my expectations and showed me what a mentor can truly be," he says.

That support does not end when the camp is over. New questions continue to arise in September, when students need to find information, choose elective courses, or learn how to use the university's information systems.

"The camp gave us a real informational advantage. We learned about elective courses, the university information system, the Students' Representation and what it does – things that later turned out to be incredibly useful," says Danielius.

An Opportunity to Get to Know University Before It Begins

Freshers' camps offer much more than the chance to meet mentors and future classmates. They also allow students to experience their future study environment before the academic year even begins.

"Lecturers and representatives of the Student Scientific Society visited our camp. It was great to see what I would be doing, who I would be studying with, and the people I would be meeting over the coming years," Gabija recalls.

Sibilė says that the camp not only met her expectations but exceeded them.

"It was such a unique experience that you immediately want to relive it. That's one of the reasons why I decided to become a mentor myself," she reveals.

Gabija also finds it difficult to imagine what the beginning of her studies would have been like without attending the camp.

"I honestly don't know what my first year would have looked like if I hadn't gone to the freshers' camp. It definitely helped me become part of the community and get to know both my classmates and my lecturers. I had such a wonderful experience that I'm now looking forward to giving this year's first-year students an equally memorable one," she says.

Information about every VU SR faculty freshers' camp, including dates and ticket information, can be found on the VU SR Freshmen Camps webpage.

Prieiti prie nepažįstamųjų gali būti nedrąsu, todėl svarbus (-i) tampa kuratorius (-ė), pirmasis (-oji) pasisveikinantis (-i) ir pakviečiantis (-i) prisijungt prie pokalbių ratelio.

Man atrodo, stovykla leido mums susibendrauti ir tą ryšį išlaikyti iki dabar“, – sako Gabija.

Danielius į stovyklą išvyko beveik nieko nesitikėdamas – prisijungti pasiūlė buvusi bendraklasė. Vis dėlto stotyje jis suprato, kad teks megzti naujas pažintis. Nors tuo metu užkalbinti nepažįstamą žmogų jam nebuvo įprasta, Danielius išdrįso pradėti pokalbį su kitu pirmakursiu.

„Dabar iš to išsirutuliojo labai graži draugystė – esame labai artimi draugai“, – pasakoja jis.

Pagalbos galima kreiptis į visus (-as) kuratorius (-es)

Over the course of three days, participants discussed what changes are needed this year for the Vilnius University and VU SR communities and mapped out concrete steps to make those changes happen.

The directions for this year's strategic goals were first outlined during the VU SR Board and Council retreat held in June. Based on the organisation's strategy and the needs of the community, participants agreed to focus on three priorities: strengthening the culture of feedback, empowering VU SR members, and improving the psychological resilience of the Vilnius University community.

From Understanding the Context to Concrete Actions

The first day of the planning sessions was dedicated to understanding the context behind each strategic goal. Participants reviewed the current situation, discussed work already completed, examined the tools and resources already available within the organisation, and identified the challenges that should be addressed over the coming year.

Participants then split into three working groups and began the planning process. During these sessions, they refined the wording of each strategic goal, defined objectives, identified concrete actions, and established indicators for measuring impact. The groups regularly presented their ideas to one another, received feedback and questions, and used this input to further improve their plans.

"The purpose of these strategic planning sessions was not only to agree on what we want to achieve but also to define very clearly how we will achieve it. The different experiences brought by people from various VU SR divisions allowed us to approach the same issues from multiple perspectives, while our shared discussions helped us identify actions that we will be able to implement consistently throughout the year," says Gabriela Šlepetytė, Coordinator of the VU SR Strategic Planning Process.

Building an Effective Feedback Culture

The first strategic goal aims to establish an effective and consistent feedback cycle for study quality at Vilnius University.

The objective is to ensure that feedback does not end with students simply completing a survey. Students should know that their opinions have been heard, lecturers should receive support in collecting and applying feedback, and student representatives should have the tools needed to use the collected information to initiate meaningful improvements in the study process.

To achieve this, VU SR will strengthen the competencies of student representatives serving on Study Programme Committees in collecting and analysing feedback. A toolkit for mid-semester feedback will be developed for lecturers, while the end-of-semester survey system will be reviewed and improved. Efforts will also be made to encourage lecturers to explain to students what changes have been introduced to their courses based on previous feedback.

"We want fewer situations where a student completes a survey but never finds out what happened to their responses. Feedback should become part of our organisational culture: students share their experiences, those experiences are analysed, action is taken, and the community can clearly see the changes their feedback has helped create," explains Šlepetytė.

Making Better Use of Existing Knowledge

The direction of the second strategic goal changed during the planning process. Initially, the focus was on developing a member engagement plan. However, after evaluating the organisation's current situation, participants concluded that strengthening institutional memory should come first.

Over the years, VU SR has accumulated a wide range of methodological resources, practical tools, and organisational experience. However, this knowledge is not always easy to find, regularly updated, or consistently used in everyday activities. The new priority is therefore to foster a culture of collecting, preserving, transferring, and actively using institutional knowledge.

The organisation plans to gather and systematise existing materials, evaluate which resources remain relevant, update the most important ones, and establish a regular review process. At the same time, VU SR members will be encouraged to use accumulated knowledge when planning activities, making decisions, and transferring responsibilities to new members.

"We are not abandoning the idea of member engagement. Instead, we are looking for a more sustainable way to achieve it because we already have a great number of tools available. They create little value if members do not know where to find them, how to use them, or why they matter in the first place. Strong institutional memory can become the foundation that helps people become involved more quickly and confidently take on responsibility," says Šlepetytė.

Strengthening Psychological Resilience

The third strategic goal seeks to ensure that members of the Vilnius University community know how to strengthen their psychological resilience and are better prepared to recover from challenges or crisis situations.

This year, the focus will be not only on raising awareness but also on providing the community with practical knowledge and tools. Another priority is ensuring that students receive clear and reliable information in difficult situations and that VU SR itself is prepared to respond to crises in a consistent and coordinated manner.

Planned actions include strengthening resilience-related competencies throughout students' university experience, reviewing and expanding communication channels, and preparing an internal crisis prevention and management plan for VU SR.

"During challenges or crises, it is not enough to simply tell people to be resilient. The community needs to know where to find reliable information, what steps to take, and where to seek help. Our goal is to make this knowledge available before difficult situations arise, not only once they have already happened," Šlepetytė emphasises.

A Plan Whose Success Will Be Measured by Real Change

The goals and actions refined during the strategic planning sessions will form the basis of VU SR's Annual Strategic Action Plan. The plan will be reviewed and approved by the VU SR Parliament, after which the most important stage will begin: turning the planned solutions into reality.

"After these strategic planning sessions, we have a much clearer picture of where we want to be in a year's time. The real success of this process will not be measured by the length of the document or the number of completed activities, but by whether students experience tangible improvements in their studies, whether VU SR members can make better use of the organisation's accumulated knowledge, and whether our community is better prepared to face future challenges," Šlepetytė concludes.
